Today we left Cedar City and drove to Kanab,
Utah. On the way we stopped at Pipe
Springs National Monument, a few miles south of the Utah border in Arizona. There is a
building here called Winsor Castle which was built in 1872.
This building was built by the Mormons trying to escape the polygamy
rules of Utah. The building was designed by Brigham Young and was built like a fortress for protection from the Indians. The Mormons just took
the land from the Kaibab Paiute Indians.
They built Winsor Castle over Pipe Springs and the Indians didn’t
have access to the water. We went a tour of the building and picked some grapes from the grape vines. The monument is now a joint
Tribal - National Park site.
We saw a Liberty Casita, an Escape and a Scamp
at Pipe Springs Monument. Also, there
is a Spirit Casita at the RV park with us tonight.
After unhooking, we discovered that for 3 days
we have been one hour off. We didn’t
realize that when we crossed into Utah we were now in Mountain Time. So, we drove into town to look around. We went to the Little Hollywood Museum. This museum has some sets from western movies that were made in the area. One of the sets was a couple of buildings used
in The Outlaw Josey Wales. They looked like they were made of adobe but they were made of fiberglass. Kanab
has a festival called Western Legends Roundup. This year it is August 22-24.
We can’t stay here though because the RV park is already booked. There will be some old time actors
here -- Clint Walker (Cheyenne), James
Drury (The Virginian), Ed Faulkener & Lana Wood (Have Gun-Will Travel),
Johnny Crawford (The Rifleman), James Hayden (F-Troop), Andrew Prine
(Gunsmoke), Robert Fuller (Wagon Train and Emergency), Dan Haggerty (Grizzley
Adams). There are a few more. Cheryl Rogers-Barnett, the daughter of Roy
Rogers and Dale Evans, will be here.
There will be a breakfast with the stars and autographs.
We went to eat at Escobar’s Mexican restaurant
and rented the movie Jack Reacher. I
have read all of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child.
