7/9/13 - San Diego, CA
After breakfast we drove to Point Loma to the
Cabrillo National Monument. This place
commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. He was the first European to set foot on the
western coast of the United States. The
Naval Base at Ft. Loma is home of the 3rd Fleet. On the point is also Fort Rosecrans National
Cemetery where there are rows and rows of small white headstones. I saw one headstone and the man had served
in the Spanish American War, WWI and WWII.
He lived from 1877 until 1964 and was buried here. I love the history of the headstones at
these cemeteries. At the end of the
point there was Point Loma lighthouse and a view of San Diego Harbor, Coronado Island, the naval
training center, the submarine facility and the Naval airstrip. It was too foggy for pictures at the overview. We walked down to the tidal pools and the
cliffs. Kim and Steve told us about
Point Loma Seafood, a really good place to eat, so we drove there and had a
very late lunch. Then we drove over the
Coronado Bridge to Coronado Island and went to Coronado Brewing. Jim wanted to go wade in the ocean at
Coronado Beach so we drove there and walked along the shore. We saw a really strange purple
jellyfish. Then we went to Monkey Paw
brewing for one more beer and back to the Casita.
