8/21/13 - Navajo National Monument, AZ

We left Page this morning and drove to Navajo National Monument.  This monument has a really large Indian cliff dwelling.  You can take a 4-5 hour hike down to it or you can take a paved 1.6 mile hike and see it from across the canyon.  We took the paved trail.  The longer hike left at 10:30 and we weren’t here then.  It leaves again tomorrow at 10:30 and we will be gone.  Jim took another trail to see the aspen forest and the canyon.  I waited up at the visitor center for him.

There are two campgrounds in the park.  One is a paved loop with flush toilets and a dishwashing station very close to the visitors center.  The other is a gravel road with pit toilets -- we opted for it because it was more remote.  It is very, very quiet in this one.  Both loops are free to camp in.

After we went to the overlook it started to sprinkle.  Jim put out the awning and we sat outside with a drink.   I cooked beef stroganoff and then Jim started the generator to update the blog.  We are headed to Flagstaff tomorrow.
