8/10/13 - Tuttle Creek BLM Campground, Lone Pine, CA

It was really quiet and dark last night.  There wasn’t any noise like you hear in an RV park campground.  This morning we took our coffee and walked along Tuttle Creek near the Casita.  Then we drove along Tuttle Creek Road again to see the rocks with the morning sun on them.   There were a lot of bike riders coming through the canyon huffing and puffing up the narrow, steep, winding road.  We came across a really neat formation with an opening in it to a cave.  The cave was used by miners to store their supplies.

We drove down Movie Flats road to see the BLM dispersed camping sites.  This road is where a lot of B western movies were made and some famous movies and TV shows, too.  Gunga Din , How the West Was Won, Rawhide, Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, Yellow Sky, and Along the Great Divide were among some of the movies.  Bonanza, Wagon Train, and Tycoon with John Wayne were filmed here.  Also, one of my most favorite movies, Tremors, was filmed here, as were some other science fiction movies such as Star Trek Generations and Iron Man.  At the end of the road we hiked to several arches in the rocks.  Then we drove into town to the Lone Pine Film History Museum.  The museum was full of wonderful old movie posters, props, costumes and memorabilia of movies filmed in the area. The most recent movie filmed here was Django Unchained.

We had a quick lunch at McDonalds and then drove to the edge of town to a memorial for the 1872 Earthquake victims.  We stopped at Face Rock and Gunga Din Monument on the way back to the Casita.  Jim picked out pictures for the blog and we went back into town for a beer at the VFW.  We found out that this VFW has RV hookups for traveling members.

Note - as with all pictures in the blog, they can be enlarged by clicking on them.
